As mentioned in the foreword to the previously published FIP Guide to Good Practice, Inspection and Maintenance of Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Structures, our Commission has been working on the subject of this report for a number of years. This guide, dealing with the repair and strengthening of concrete structures, has its roots in the first attempts made in the early 1980s. However, the rapid technological development and feedback from both successful and less successful repair and strengthening work required several updates to be undertaken.

The final text was primarily prepared by Professor Dr D. Jungwirth and Dr A. Windisch, assisted by W. Bilger, J. Lindgren and myself. Further valuable input was provided by Dr W. Podolny, several other Commission members and the Editorial Board of FIP. All these efforts are gratefully acknowledged.

It was the aim of the authors to provide useful information on how to deal with the repair and strengthening of concrete structures. In the first part, the general problems of repair and strengthening—such as the analysis of defects and damage, the design of repair and strengthening measures, and other important related aspects—are presented. In the second part, repair methods and materials are discussed in detail, and the last part reviews possibilities for the strengthening of concrete structures.

In my opinion, this guide represents a useful synthesis of the know-how available today in various countries. I wish to express my thanks to the authors and the contributing members of the Commission.
