In 1972, FIP published Recommendations for acceptance and application of post-tensioning systems, and in 1975 these were republished as an appendix to Guides to Good Practice: Practical Construction. The second publication differed from the first in a few, but rather important, points.

As a result of further developments in testing methods and a better understanding of the behaviour of prestressing tendons in their anchorages, the Commission on Prestressing Steel and Systems decided to appoint a working group to study, review and evaluate the recommendations and, if necessary, to draft new recommendations. This draft was agreed upon during the meeting of the Commission in September 1980 and is now published herein, superseding the recommendations of 1972 and 1975.

I express my gratitude to the members of the working group, Messrs Birkenmaier, Rostásy, Andrew, Binnekamp and Harvey, of whom the first two mentioned were actively involved in preparing the necessary documents.

I hope these recommendations will prove useful and will be used as a starting point by bodies writing standards, whether national, regional or international.
