This year, fib celebrates its 25th anniversary. This is an opportunity to look both back and forward. The best impression of the development of fib over time can be obtained by examining the Model Codes. The 1990, 2010, and 2020 editions show a considerable shift in focus, from structural safety and serviceability, to durability and service life, and now to sustainability.

Some examples are given of current developments, including sustainable solutions using high-performance materials, the development of concrete with low binder content for potential large-scale applications, the design of buildings for adaptability and thus the avoidance of future demolition, the development of a solid basis for the assessment of existing structures, and the future role of artificial intelligence in structural design.

Subsequently, some considerations are presented regarding the role of fib in a rapidly changing world. Finally, suggestions are made for relevant research areas in which growing interest is expected.
