No. 54. . Concrete Structure: New Trends for Eco-Efficiency and Performance - 18th fib Symposium Proceedings - 14-16 June 2021 - Online, Lisbon, Portugal PDF format
On behalf of the Scientific Committee, the Organising Committee, GPBE – the Portuguese Group of Structural Concrete (the Portuguese National Group of fib) as organising institution, and LNEC – the Portuguese Laboratory for Civil Engineering as host institution, it is our great pleasure and honour to welcome you to the fib Symposium 2021. This event is organised annually by fib – the International Federation for Structural Concrete – and aims to bring together professionals, researchers, and students from all over the world to discuss recent advances in structural concrete. This year, the Symposium is held under the theme “Concrete Structures – New Trends for Eco-Efficiency and Performance.” It was our intention to organise an on-site event; however, due to the recent new waves of the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided, for safety reasons, to host the event fully online. Nevertheless, an online platform was designed to replicate an in-person experience, including cultural and social activities.
Nowadays, society is more demanding than ever before, and innovation is required at all levels. Structures must respond to climate change and therefore become more eco-efficient and resilient. Costs must be reduced and assessed based on life-cycle analysis. Design is increasingly supported by finite element methods (FEM) and building information modelling (BIM). Buildings are becoming taller and bridges longer. Service life and durability requirements have increased. Urban land values have risen significantly, making rehabilitation as important as new construction. These are some of the topics addressed within the four main themes of the Symposium: (1) Trend-setting projects, (2) Materials – eco-efficiency and performance, (3) Structural behaviour – new in-situ and precast solutions, and (4) Analysis and design – advanced methods and innovative approaches.
We received 397 abstracts and 231 full papers from all over the world. All submissions underwent double peer review by members of the Scientific Committee, according to their expertise. In addition, four renowned experts were invited to deliver keynote lectures on highly relevant topics, namely: monitoring and maintenance of the largest Portuguese concrete bridge, the 1-kilometre-tall Jeddah Tower, the fib Model Code 2020, and the use of recycled aggregates in structural concrete.
Finally, we would like to sincerely thank the members of the Organising Committee for their time and dedication, the Scientific Committee for their valuable comments that improved the quality of the proceedings, the authors for their interesting contributions, the participants from different countries for enriching the scientific and technical discussions, and the sponsors for their support of the event and for presenting their products and services in the field of structural concrete.
