The 4th International Ph.D. Symposium in Civil Engineering follows the general concept of the first three symposia, which took place in Budapest (1996 and 1998) and Vienna (2000). This year, however, the contributions are more focused on specific subjects.

The Ph.D. Symposium provides Ph.D. students with the opportunity to present their current research projects and to discuss their results at a high international level. All contributions were reviewed by the Scientific Committee, composed of 37 internationally recognized scientists, in order to ensure an appropriate scientific standard. For the first time, the number of submitted abstracts was so high that not all papers could be accepted. Out of 210 submissions, 160 papers were selected, with particular emphasis on research projects presenting substantial results suitable for discussion within the various sessions.

Nevertheless, the quality of individual papers may vary due to differences in university standards and in the progress achieved by the students. In addition, sociocultural differences exist in approaches to paper evaluation and review.

The 4th Ph.D. Symposium is organized by the civil engineering departments of the Technische Universität München and the Universität der Bundeswehr München. Sincere thanks are extended to the Scientific Committee, the sponsors, and, above all, to the staff of the participating institutes, as well as to the following members of the Organizing Committee: Karsten Beckhaus, Kerstin Bierbrauer, Kurt Borchert, Thomas Gollwitzer, Petra Rücker, and Doris Strehlein.

Special thanks are due to the sponsors, in particular the main sponsors: Badische Stahlwerke, Delta Draht, Baustahlgewebe Group, Bilfinger & Berger AG, Heidelberger Zement AG, and HOCHTIEF AG; as well as Abelein Jankowski Gebbeken Ingenieure GmbH, Dywidag Systems International, ERICO, Ingenieurbüro Prof. Schießl, MC-Bauchemie, Züblin AG, and Vereinsbank.

Last but not least, we express our sincere gratitude to the initiator of the Ph.D. Symposium, György Balázs, who served as chairman of the first and second symposia.

In the spirit of support promoted by fib (Fédération Internationale du Béton), we would like to wish all Ph.D. students a successful scientific career, many opportunities for international exchange, and, above all, the satisfaction and enthusiasm that form the foundation for fruitful work as future civil engineers.
