Being a PhD student is an extremely demanding, yet highly rewarding experience. A PhD candidate is expected to become one of the best-prepared researchers in their field within just a few years. This expertise can open the door to a valuable academic or professional career.

The PhD journey culminates in the completion of a thesis after an intense period of research. But why is this period so challenging? One reason is that PhD students often feel uncertain about ever reaching the end of their work. At the same time, they frequently experience a heavy workload, combining research responsibilities with, in many cases, teaching duties.

Perhaps the greatest challenge for a PhD student is identifying a path toward genuinely new scientific results—which is a requirement at most universities for obtaining a PhD—and presenting these results in a clear and coherent manner.

The International PhD Symposium was initiated in 1996 מתוך the recognition that PhD students need support in addressing these challenges. The symposium was therefore designed as a dedicated forum for PhD students—complementing their home university programs—where they can present the progress of their research, engage in discussions, and receive valuable guidance on how to advance and complete their work.

In this unique setting, only PhD students and young researchers are invited to give presentations. Their supervisors participate primarily in the discussions, which are considered just as important as the presentations themselves.

The PhD Symposium also provides an excellent opportunity to gain insight into research topics across different universities and to establish scientific connections with peers working in similar fields.

The idea of the International PhD Symposium has gained increasing interest worldwide and is now organized every two years.

Special thanks are due to fib (Fédération Internationale du Béton – International Federation for Structural Concrete) for supporting this initiative. Appreciation is also extended to PhD supervisors for encouraging their students to participate, and, most importantly, to the PhD students themselves, whose dedication and hard work make this series of symposia possible.
