The fib International PhD Symposium in Civil Engineering has become an established event in the academic calendar of doctoral students. The Symposium was previously held in Budapest (1996), Vienna (2000), Munich (2002), Delft (2004), Zurich (2006), and Stuttgart (2008), and we are very pleased to have the privilege of hosting the 8th fib International PhD Symposium in Civil Engineering.

Considering current trends in civil engineering research, the following themes were selected for the 8th International PhD Symposium in Civil Engineering:
I. Structural analysis and design
II. Innovative structural systems
III. Advanced materials
IV. Sustainability and cost efficiency
V. Strengthening and repair
VI. Monitoring

We would like to thank the contributing PhD students for their efforts, as well as their supervisors for their support of the Symposium. It is an important part of academia to present research projects to an international audience and to share knowledge and experience with colleagues from the international research community.

To ensure a high scientific standard, all contributions were reviewed by the Scientific Committee, which consists of 30 internationally recognised researchers. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the reviewers for their guidance of the PhD students in finalising their manuscripts. A total of 153 abstracts were submitted, resulting in 109 accepted contributions. As in previous years, the quality of the manuscripts ranged from good to excellent, reflecting the experience and training of the young researchers.

The Organising Committee would also like to thank the PhD students and post-docs at DTU who supported the quality control of the manuscripts, as well as the Symposium Secretary, Judith Selk Albertsen, who patiently assisted throughout the process.

Last but not least, we would like to thank our sponsors, whose contributions are highly appreciated. We would like to express special appreciation to the Knud Højgaard Foundation, whose significant support made the Symposium possible.

We wish all participants a successful and rewarding Symposium, and a fulfilling career within the civil engineering community.
