The Egyptian Society of Engineers, together with the Egyptian National Groups of IABSE and fib, are delighted and honoured to organize the Bridge Engineering Conference 2000: Past Achievements, Current Trends, Future Technologies at the beginning of the new millennium.

At this time, several major bridge projects have recently been completed in Egypt, while other remarkable projects are currently under construction. These include, for example, the Suez Canal Bridge and the El Ferdan Railway Swing Bridge over the Suez Canal, as well as the El-Mouneeb, El-Warrak, and Aswan bridges over the River Nile. In addition, efficient schemes are being developed for their monitoring and maintenance.

The main aim of this conference is to provide a forum for bridge engineers to discuss recent developments in various aspects of bridge engineering. Through presentations by renowned practitioners and researchers from around the world, as well as through the conference proceedings, participants have the opportunity to learn and exchange experiences.

The two-volume conference proceedings include a total of 97 technical papers and reports on recent bridge projects worldwide, along with nine keynote papers and three invited contributions by distinguished engineers. We express our sincere thanks to the authors for sharing their expertise and for the time and effort invested in preparing these excellent papers. We are pleased to have received contributions from 27 countries.

We would also like to thank fib and IABSE for co-sponsoring the conference. We hope that this event marks the beginning of many future conferences to be organized in Egypt. It has also provided an opportunity for the active involvement of the Egyptian National Groups of fib and IABSE.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all members of the Scientific Committee for their considerable efforts in reviewing and evaluating the abstracts and papers. Our thanks also go to the Organizing Committee for their dedication in preparing the conference activities and for their patience in meeting its many demands. We are equally grateful to the financial supporters and to all those who have contributed in various ways.

We hope that conference participants and readers of the proceedings will find them both valuable and informative. We look forward to welcoming you again at future conferences in Egypt.
