The proceedings presented here are the result of an initiative concerning Ph.D. studies. Every university has its own programs for Ph.D. studies. These programs may differ significantly, but they all aim to help Ph.D. students achieve their doctoral degree within a limited number of years.

This forum is intended to be similar to those generally organized for technical or scientific presentations, and as broad as possible in order to gather opinions on a large scale. It was therefore called the Ph.D. Symposium.

The format of the symposium consists of short oral presentations given by the Ph.D. students themselves. These presentations are followed by immediate discussion. The main results of the studies are summarized in the symposium proceedings.

The objectives of the Ph.D. Symposium 1996 are:

1. To provide a forum for Ph.D. students in civil engineering to present the progress of their work.
2. To discuss the results of ongoing Ph.D. studies in order to support future work.
3. To give Ph.D. students the opportunity to establish contacts for international communication.
4. To compare Ph.D. studies in various countries.
