This paper will list and briefly review some of the more significant North American developments in the field of reinforced concrete columns during the last decade. It will touch on a number of aspects of the column problem, including the strength and behaviour of both short and long columns, as well as the present state of column design recommendations in North America.
In a paper of this length, any review must naturally be selective, and some significant developments may have been omitted. In addition, since this is a review of North American developments, no attempt has been made to mention or credit the many significant European developments.
