The CEB/FIP International Recommendations for the Design and Construction of Concrete Structures, approved in Prague in June 1970, present in point R.42.1 the basic assumptions for the design of sections under normal loads and stresses.

These basic assumptions are applied to practical problems in the CEB Bending–Compression Manual. Following the usual approach, the different particular cases are separately examined: uniaxial or skew bending; rectangular or non-rectangular sections; one, two or more reinforcement layers; simple bending, composite bending or compression, etc. For all these cases, practical design aids such as tables, diagrams, and formulae are presented, whose use is often restricted to particular values of the steel elastic limit, the reinforcement cover, etc.

The purpose of this work is to address the questions connected with the application of the basic design assumptions to the following general problems:

  • the checking problem: given a reinforced concrete section, check it;
  • the first design problem: given a reinforced concrete section, design it with a given reinforcement distribution (find the required amount of steel);
  • the second design problem: given a reinforced concrete section, design it (find the optimum reinforcement distribution leading to a minimum amount of steel).
