In Chapter 42.1 of the CEB–FIP International Recommendations for the Design and Construction of Concrete Structures, the basic principles for reinforced concrete design are presented.

For the application of these principles in practical design, tables and diagrams are necessary. They enable design problems to be solved with a minimum of computation.

In accordance with the resolutions of the CEB Plenary Assembly in Copenhagen (1971), the Recommendations and Manuals are intended to serve as models for the development of national standards.

The main scope of this design manual is to explain how the Recommendations can be applied to solve practical problems and to demonstrate the development and presentation of practical aids, such as formulas, tables, and diagrams. This leads to a better understanding of the theoretical basic assumptions. A simplification and an international standardization of design charts are also achieved.
