Since the 24th Plenary Session in Rotterdam (1985), it has become customary to devote one afternoon to two parallel discussion sessions on selected topics, introduced briefly by invited speakers. From the beginning, however, it was felt that these interesting events required some form of record for the information of the respective participants, both those who took part in the parallel discussions and CEB members who could not attend.

During the 26th CEB Plenary Session in Dubrovnik, the two selected topics were “Design Aspects of High-Strength Concrete” (Session IV A) and “Modelling of Structural Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete in Computer Programs” (Session IV B). In partial fulfilment of Technical Resolution No. 6, adopted in Dubrovnik (cf. CEB-News No. 83), the contributions on the design aspects of high-strength concrete are compiled in this volume together with the available contributions to the discussion.

Whereas CEB Bulletins d’Information predominantly present material prepared by Commissions or General Task Groups—i.e. material that has been “filtered” through a process of harmonisation—for the above-mentioned special discussion sessions, introductory speakers from outside the CEB are also invited. The contributions published here therefore reflect, to some extent, personal views. They were, however, highly appreciated as a stimulus for discussion and as a presentation of new perspectives. The additional efforts of all speakers to provide written versions of their oral presentations, as well as the preparatory work and chairmanship of the technical coordinators of the sessions, are gratefully acknowledged.
