In 1978 the CEB-FIP Model Code for the design of concrete structures under normal use conditions was finalized and presented to the public. Subsequently it was thought to be useful and necessary to prepare an appendix to this Model Code on "Design of Concrete Structures for Fire Resistance"

The FIP-Permanent Commission on Fire Resistance of Concrete Structures was asked to do this task.

The FIP-Commission on Fire has published in the last years two reports in which guidelines for a suitable des ign and structural details are summarized in order to give practical methods al lowing the design of concrete structural members for good fire resistance. In 1979 a CEB/FIP-Task Group was formed and started to prepare this first draft of such an appendix to the Model Code .

With respect to the layout and the content of this appendix it was tried to present in the beginning a concentrated view of the fire risks in general and of the possibilities for fire fighting methods and precautions against damages caused by fire. In connection with this also the methods should be discussed, which are available for an accurate fire design of concrete structural elements . An introduction into the thermal and mechanical properties of the structural material s concrete and steel under high temperatures should be given as well.

The main part of the appendix is devoted to the different design methods for concrete structural members under fire attack, which is fol lowed by guidance on suitable structural details and detailing of reinforcing as well; a summarizing view on the behaviour of entire build ings un der fire attack is given in the end .

With respect to the character of this document basic scientific items are treated comparatively detailed; so far the first draft of the appendix differs from the farmer publications of the FIP-Commiss ion , which were mainly devoted to the practicing engineer. Close connections to CIB Wl4 - especial ly active in problems of structural fire safety - were maintained in order to get knowledge of the latest scientific results.

The first draft of this appendix is now presented to the public. The authors ask for critical review and expect suggestions for improvement s and additions.
