N°187. 1988. Concrete Structures under Impact and Impulsive Loading - Synthesis Report.
This Bulletin of Information was initiated by CEB at the Plenary Session in Prague in 1983 , where CEB GENERAL TASK-GROUP 14 was founded.
Its aim was to provide civil enginers with help and guidance in designing reinforced concrete structures against short lasting transient loads called impulsive loads or impact. Since these actions are mainly accidental, concrete and steel ·in their highly non linear range of behaviour have to be taken into account . Therefore the linear analytical solutions published in many text books can not be used as a starting bas is for practical design.
Nevertheless, an exhaustive treatment of this subject cannot be expected as the whole matter is in rapid progression and a topic of re search still in progress . With the main chapters:
the Bulletin tries to give a first introduction to the treatment of reinforced concrete structures under impact and impulsive loading.
Rational design shoud start on the basis of the governing mechanical equations . However, the relevant equations are highly nonlinear and simple analytical formulae can usually not be derived . One way of treating the subject is to develop the necessary solving algorithms in such a way that they can easily be programmed on small computers.
Alternatively, empirical formulae secured by experiments are given to aid the designer.
Finally, it must be emphasized that this Bulletin was not written to present a state of the art report on impact and impulsive loading of concrete structures. An exhaustive literature survey is not provided, and publications are intended to furnish the reader with additional informaion and give further direction. The Bulletin was established by the members of CEB-GTG 14.
