This document is the first of a series of reports written by members of the Commission on Prestressing Steels and Systems, who for this purpose worked together in small ad hoc committees.

This report, prepared by Mr. D. C. Binnekamp of the Netherlands, is of great importance. Its purpose is to inform the design engineer, as the user of prestressing steel, about the various manufacturing processes, the types and properties of prestressing steel, and related topics.

It has been compiled in such a way that practical information can be obtained directly from it. In my opinion, the information provided in this document could also be condensed into national and international regulations relating to prestressed concrete. I sincerely hope that the report will serve that purpose and thereby contribute to the unification of prestressed concrete regulations and codes of practice.

At the request of the Executive Council of FIP, some notes on corrosion have been added to the report, in an attempt to clarify many widespread misunderstandings on this subject. I strongly invite readers to send their comments and views to the Commission’s Secretariat, to assist and improve the revisions envisaged when a second edition of this report becomes necessary.

Finally, on behalf of the Commission, I thank Mr. Binnekamp for his work and for the dedication he has shown to the advancement of prestressed concrete in preparing this report.
