Following the publication of Recommendations for the Design and Construction of Prestressed Ground Anchors in May 1982 (FIP Report 2/7, FIP, Cement and Concrete Association, Wexham Springs, 1982), the Working Group, newly chaired by Professor G. S. Littlejohn, prepared the present Report.

An international survey has been carried out on reported cases of tendon corrosion. Compared with earlier reviews, there has been a much greater willingness to provide information on problems that have occurred. Despite this, the number of reported corrosion cases remains very small compared with the enormous number of anchorages that have been installed.

The low incidence of corrosion problems does not justify complacency. This Report provides an excellent basis for improving understanding of the potential danger of corrosion and for taking effective countermeasures to protect prestressed ground anchorages. Properly designed and constructed ground anchorages will then continue to serve as reliable structural elements for the temporary or permanent stabilization of structures, slopes, or cavities.

I would like to express my thanks to the Chairman and members of the Working Group for preparing this valuable Report.
