There are national codes covering prestressed concrete reactor vessels (PCRVs) issued in Britain, France, the United States, and the Federal Republic of Germany. However, this report is not intended to present another code. Its objective is to provide those concerned with the specification, design, and construction of PCRVs with:

  • a résumé of background material,
  • a presentation of principles and guidance, and
  • a source of reference material.

At the FIP Congress in New York in May 1974, the Commission on Concrete Storage and Pressure Vessels was established. Mr. R. E. D. Burrow assumed the leadership of the task group on PCRVs. He was faithfully and ably supported by Mr. James Irving. Others, both within and outside the Commission, made valuable contributions to this report.

Subject headings include: basic philosophy; loading; design analysis; assessment of acceptability; liners, penetrations, closure and thermal systems; materials and construction; quality assurance and quality control; vessel instrumentation; proof testing; and commissioning and operation.

The bibliography contains over 350 references, of which about 25% pertain to the section on design analysis.

FIP considers that this report fills a gap between the prescriptive language of a specific code and the practical aspects of designing and constructing a prestressed concrete reactor vessel.
