This Technical Report, dealing with important aspects of the manufacture, design, and use of precast reinforced as well as prestressed concrete piles, is a selection of the most valuable parts of a series of three Dutch handbooks on the subject.

The initiative to make this valuable Dutch experience in the field of piling available internationally was taken by the FIP Honorary President, Dr. G. F. Janssonius. After selecting the relevant parts of the Dutch work, he proposed to the FIP Commission on Prefabrication that an English translation should be published as an FIP technical paper. Thanks to the willingness of Mr. G. J. Carree of the Netherlands to undertake the translation and necessary adaptation, the project has now been successfully completed. Mr. Carree was, together with Mr. J. G. Hulsbergen, the chief editor of the three Dutch volumes.

The report contains technical rules, recommendations, advice, selected Dutch standards, and descriptions of execution procedures. Most of these are of general interest to all those involved in piling activities or concerned with the quality of piled foundations. It is therefore expected that investors, relevant authorities, designers, contractors, and manufacturers in all areas where concrete piling is used will benefit from this report.

Although the report is outstanding in the comprehensive way it addresses the subject of concrete piling, it reflects its local origin. Issues and problems related to rocky foundations or subsoil are not covered, either in pile design or in execution. Procedures for splicing piles are also not included.
