The Concrete Sea Structures Commission is currently preparing several reports enlarging the scope of the Recommendations for the Design and Construction of Concrete Sea Structures. These special reports, which are to be appended to the recommendations, will bring to light new developments promoting the use of concrete in marine environments.

As new opportunities have appeared in the Arctic Ocean in recent years, the Commission felt it necessary to provide engineers involved in the design and construction of concrete structures intended for this particular environment with guidance in the assessment of ice load actions on such structures.

A special Working Group was therefore set up to meet these needs. A report covering the main aspects of the mechanical properties of Arctic ice, as well as its behaviour when impinging upon structures, has been issued by this group.

All interested persons will find valuable facts and figures in this report, which is complemented by a broad list of useful references.

I am very grateful to the Working Group on Arctic Activities, and particularly to its Chairman, Dr. K. H. Runge, for having produced such an interesting and helpful document.
