The FIP Recommendations Practical Design of Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Structures (based on the CEB–FIP Model Code MC78),¹ drawn up by the FIP Commission on Practical Design, were published in 1984. The main purpose of these Recommendations was to provide practising engineers with a concise set of modern design rules, mainly based on the more comprehensive CEB/FIP Model Code for Concrete Structures² and the work of FIP Commissions.

It has been widely felt that the feasibility and implications of using these design rules should be demonstrated through comparisons with structures actually built, in order to show practising engineers how the rules should be applied in different cases. This is the reason why the Commission undertook the calculations presented in the present document.
