Abstract:
The present recommendations are the result of the dedicated work of fib Task Group 5.5 “Fire Protection of Stay Cables”. They address a topic of growing importance for the safety and resilience of cable-supported structures worldwide. Although the probability of a severe fire event is relatively low compared with other accidental actions, recent incidents have demonstrated the potentially critical consequences for stay cables and, ultimately, for the structural integrity of bridges.
This document provides state-of-the-art guidance on the functional requirements, design considerations and testing methods for fire protection systems for stay cables. It represents a collective effort to establish consistent performance criteria, building upon international experience, scientific knowledge, and lessons learned from real events. Furthermore, it highlights the main causes of fire affecting cable-supported structures and introduces two fundamental types of qualification tests: the insulating system test and the high-temperature strength test. The former is particularly significant, as it determines the fire rating of the protection system and thus serves as the key benchmark for assessing its adequacy.
The fib is grateful to the members of Task Group 5.5 for their expertise, commitment, and collaboration in preparing these recommendations. Their work will support engineers, designers, owners, and authorities in implementing appropriate fire protection measures, thereby enhancing the safety, durability, and serviceability of critical infrastructure.
