Abstract:

The technology of visual concrete surfaces must decisively take into account the interactions of design, viewing distance, light exposure, but also formwork, release agent and concrete composition. It should be noted that concrete only develops its properties and appearance in the building itself, so that the manufacturing process of the concrete structure plays a decisive role in the application of aesthetic visual concrete surfaces. As possible corrections of deficiencies in visual concrete surfaces always require great efforts, the intense and trusting co-operation of all those involved in the construction process is absolutely necessary.

This fib-report on Visual Concrete Surfaces aims to consider these ideas by addressing both the individual technical aspects and the associated economic consequences. After a basic presentation of the classifications of visual concrete properties in various regulations, cost aspects, construction organisation and workflow are dealt with. Further technical aspects such as the influence of individual components of the concrete composition on the visual concrete properties, but also the influences from the manufacturing process of the building are compiled and discussed in detail. Finally, possibilities and methods for the evaluation of visual concrete surface properties are presented.

The report aims to contribute to making building with aesthetical visual concrete surfaces more reliable and more successful. We would like to take this opportunity to expressly thank all the authors who have compiled and explained the many key aspects from the areas mentioned above.
