Abstract:

The main aim of Commission 1 is to promote conceptual thinking in the design of structures.

Four Task Groups have been established with the following reponsibilities:

TO 1.1: To develop a framework for safety and performance concepts

TO 1.2: To study systematically the model uncertainties within the models of the Model Code 1990

TO 1.3 : To develop safety and performance concepts for structures fulfilling special tasks consisting of special materials or devices or systems

TO 1.4: To get feedback from existing structures and gather experiences to improve futur design

Three of these Task Groups present first results of their work, whereas Task Group 1.1 will report orally during the Plenary Session in Les Diablerets. Model uncertainties have been studied in detail and first conclusions could be drawn from the presented papers.

Conceptual thinking is demonstrated for concrete harriers for environmental protection and core melt-proof containments for PWR reactors. The same holds true for the derived design-criteria ensuring robustness of prestressed members.

The presented full-scale tests show the importance of those measurements and accompanying analyses. In many cases the whole system behaviour is governed by the soil.

Commission 1 intends to contribute to the further development in the use of structural concrete. Hopefully, this Bulletion 219 m arks a first step.
