This Bulletin reports on the results of work carried out within the former CEB Commission II, “Steel, Bond and Anchorages,” and its Working Group “Acceptance Requirements for Reinforcing Steel.”

Bulletin No. 104 presented detailed information on the future work of CEB Commission II, “Steel, Bond and Anchorages,” and its Working Group “Acceptance Requirements for Reinforcing Steel,” which was later approved by the technical resolutions of the 16th CEB Plenary Session.

This Bulletin reports in detail on the following work completed up to now:

  1. Experiments comparing pull-out and beam test procedures on large-diameter ribbed bars. Based on the results of these complementary investigations, recommendations can be drafted allowing a uniform classification of ribbed bars for both test procedures.
  2. In parallel with these investigations, numerous measurements of parameters describing rib geometry, as well as calculations of the corresponding rib areas, were carried out. The results of these studies may serve as a basis for the formulation of unified rules for the measurement of rib geometry and the calculation of rib area.
  3. G. Claude carried out detailed beam-test experiments on large-diameter bare bars, which, after discussion in Commission II, led to the draft proposal included here concerning an extension of Recommendation RC 5 of the Joint Committee RILEM/FIP/CEB.
  4. The report in Bulletin No. 104 on the state of the art regarding the calculation of anchorage length based on bond experiments is supplemented in this Bulletin by two publications prepared by members of the Commission. R. Eligehausen (Technische Universität Stuttgart) presents work on lap splices of tension-loaded ribbed bars with straight ends.
  5. The final report of this Bulletin reproduces the RILEM–CEB–FIP recommendations on reinforcing steel tests (April 1978 edition). However, the other reports in this Bulletin show that these recommendations require updating, a revision which has in fact been proposed by CEB Commission II, “Steel, Bond and Anchorages.”
