"THERMAL EFFECTS IN CONCRETE STRUCTURES" is a synthesis report produced by the corresponding Task Group, coordinated by Dr. H.FALKNER, within the frame of Commission II ( STRUCTURAL ANALYSlS) .

Professor F.Leonhardt was the first to cal l the attention

of C.E.B., in 1979, to the considerable damage produced in structures, and mainly in bridges, by an inadequate design against thermal effects. It was therefore decided to undertake the preparation of a guide providing practical informations

and suggestions to the engineers, at least for the usual case of environmental thermal effects.

The task appeared soon more difficult than expected: in fact, the initial idea was to provide only a structural complement to the ISO document on the environmental thermal actions, but the unsatisfactory draft of such a document could not be used, and it appeared necessary to prepare a consistent introduction covering a field which is not familiar to an ordinary structural engineer.

T\'10 chapters of this ''"report" can appear out of the field of interest and competence of C.E.B.:

-    Temperature Climatic Actions

-    Heat Transfer and Temperature Distribution.

In fact, the data and the analytical methods provided in such

chapters are out of the field of properties and methods traditionnally used in structural analysis. Nevertheless, the Group considered that it is useful to structural engineers to get an appropriate summary of the necessary background, which cannot be easily kept from the specialised books and literature.

In this difficult task, the contributions of Miss M.Emerson;, J.L.Clarke, M.J.N.Priestley and T.Zichner have been particularly appreciated.
